Diaries, 1717-1719; 1744-1762.

The diaries were extracted from various almanacs. Those of Isaac Norris, Sr. generally contain entries pertaining to his business and farm accounts. Also included are line-a-day entries of his activities, the weather, and visitors. The diaries of Isaac Norris, Jr. also note his daily activities and business records. Numerous entries were made in French and Latin and he also recorded excerpts from newspapers concerning political events of the times. The Mr. Weatherwise's Poket-Almanacs for the years 1760 and 1761 in the AAS almanac collection contain miscellaneous notes which may have been made by Isaac Norris. The almanacs were printed by W. Dunlap in Philadelphia.

Isaac Norris, a prominent Philadelphia Quaker politician, son of Isaac Norris (1671-1735). He managed the family firm, Norris and Company and after his father's death became its senior partner. In 1727, Norris was elected to the common council of Philadelphia and in 1730 became an alderman. In 1735, he was elected to the Assembly of Pennsylvania, succeeding his late father. These diaries were kept by Isaac Norris (1671-1735) and his son, Isaac Norris (1701-1766), both prominent Philadelphia men. Isaac Norris, Sr. was born in London and emigrated to Jamaica with his parents who sought to escape the religious persecution of Quakers in England.
